The town of Monte Santa Maria Tiberina has ancient origins and, as demonstrated by the nearby bronze fields found some centuries ago, should have been an Etruscan village placed on the right of river Tiber, on an easy position for commercial trading with Umbri.
The village lies on a stupendous panoramic position from where one can enjoy a beautiful view of the valley.
Starting from XI Century it was fief of the Marquis of Monte that came to Italy following the French and conquering the whole Upper Tiber Valley, building Castles and Fortresses, some of them can always be seen.
After the destruction of the Castle in 1198, due to quarrels with Innocence III, the Marquis immediately reconstructed it.
For this reason they always got
permissions and privileges from popes and imperators becoming more and more important in the area.
In 1815 the Grand duke of Tuscany Ferdinando rustled it and interrupting the dominance of the Bourbon del Monte family.
In 1859 Monte Santa Maria took part of the Italian Reign.
