Castle For Sale In Italy Historic Italian Property In Umbria Suitable For Hotel Or Private Residence
HISTORY The origins of this Castle date back to the Etruscan Age, when some construction, found underground, had been made. The first existence of the Castle then is proved from a document of 1872 where it is said that a local astronomer named Gustavo Rosati sold it to the Umbrian family of Romeo Gallenga from Perugia and his English wife, Mary Montgomery Stuart. A 20 year restoration project followed
under the renowned Perugian architect Biscarini who transformed it into a neo-gothic castle reminiscent of the English architecture of that period.
LOCATION Castello Etrusco is located only a few kilometres from the historical centre of Perugia from where it is possible to take the E45 motorway and reach Rome in about 2 hours . Assisi is 35 Kilometres away, lake Trasimeno 20 Km and Cortona only 38 Km.
STRUCTURE The structure, now finished to a
builder’s finish, comprises a main building (The Castle) and two annexes, one of which is an old hay barn with circular shape. The Castle, although needing internal works to be done, is in very good structural condition. It has beautiful frescoed ceilings and walls and also many crests of the former owner families. Vaults, stone fireplaces, battlements, communication trenches and watching towers are only some of the characteristics that made this property something unique and rare.
The entrance is through a porch which leads up to the bell tower from where it is possible to enjoy a wide view onto the Trasimeno Lake and Perugia. The building is set on four floors and characterized by an octagonal tower with a marvellous terrace on top, from where it is possible to enjoy a 360° view opening over the rolling hills surrounding Perugia . The main entrance is framed by a perfectly preserved original portal.
The rooms of the main level revoke history as well as the architectural interests of the owners – the Tapestry Room has ornate windows, the Red Sitting Room a coffered ceiling in wood, the study a fireplace decorated with frescos of the family crests. There is a small chapel with a sacristy and a gallery reserved for the ladies and connected through a winding staircase to the upper floors. The main marble staircase is located within the tower.
Many carefully designed and decorated rooms including a library with beautiful frescoed ceiling are located on the first floor. The servant area is located on the second floor where the rooms are plain. The attic floor with wooden beamed ceiling is in need of restoration. The lower ground floor represents in the past was used as storage and wine cellars. The direct access to the garden and its lemon tree greenhouses
makes it particularly suitable to create a spa wellness centre and an indoor swimming pool. The property has already been structurally restored and the roof done. The Castle is surrounded by its 6 hectares of park . The access is given by the two gates with also pedestrian passages.
A wide road lined with pine trees and landscaped greenery leads towards the castle. The U-shaped stables were designed and built by the famous Musgrave’s U.K.
Historically Important (among the visitors in the past there were Gabriele D’Annunzio and Guglielmo Marconi). Positioned on a low hill the property enjoys wonderful panoramic view over the surrounding hills. Ideal as a private residence, a luxury Hotel or a Spa wellness centre. All the services have already been connected. The access is through 300 m of white road in good condition. | Price €4,500,000
