The origins of the name “Anghiari” come from “castrum angularis”, denomination of the medieval castle that formed the first inhabited unit.
The city was mentioned for the first time around the year 1000 in a parchment paper preserved in the nearby Città di Castello.
The town became part of the Florentine republic in 1300 and in 1440 took place the famous Battle of Anghiari, event which allowed to hand down the name to posterity, thanks to the legend of the fresco by Leonardo da Vinci, painted at Palazzo Vecchio, in Florence.

In 1860 Anghiari joins the Savoia monarchy and the Italian State afterwards.
