PROPERTY DESCRIPTION
Siena Tuscany Italy Superb Benedictine Monastery Prestigious Luxury Home Or Hotel
HISTORY A few kilometres from a town of medieval origins, in the heart of Crete Senesi, we catch sight of this jewel of rare charme and beauty, whose origins date back, according to tradition, to the Age of Saint Benedict. Some papal bulls confirm that the Monastery was
built around 1031. From the second part of XIV Century the Abbazia began to depopulate and only two monks remained. Pope Gregorio XI decided to convert the Convent into a prior house of the Monastery of Monte Uliveto Maggiore, where are still conserved some important documents regarding life in the Abbadia. In 1700 the complex was renovated, but a few years later it was annexed to the Pieve of San Giovanni a Vescona.
The chapel of Saint Mary, Giacomo and Cristofero
used to host the famous pale of Ambrogio Lorenzetti, depicting the Saint Michele Arcangelo killing the dragon, a wooden altar and an old crucifix. These works of art are now conserved at the museum of Asciano.
RESTORATION The church has been restored externally and in the roof as well as the bell tower.
Many years of attentive and scrupulous work have brought back the property to its old splendour: the bell tower and the Romanic church, but also the cloister
with its two arcades of porch and the two wells. The lounges and the cells have been restored and made suitable to offer the maximum comfort without changing the original structure.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION The abbey measures 2525 square metres in all and is disposed on four levels.
LOWER GROUND FLOOR (130 square metres): Accessed both through the external staircase and the two internal ones, the lower ground floor composes of: wardrobe, laundry
room, storeroom, closet with refrigerating room, two bathrooms for men, two for women and one for handicappers, and a crypt.
GROUND FLOOR (571 square metres): It is the widest area, composed of: kitchen, wardrobe, three dining rooms, library, three offices, tv room with bar, two bathrooms, meeting room, porch and cloister. This floor is accessed both from the cloister and externally.
The courtyard, lying in between the arcades of the cloister and
the aisles of the church, is completely paved with bricks of the Crete Senesi and has two wells. One is bigger and has a particular door-lock shape, collects rainwater from the roof and through complicated pipelines, provided water to the small pond. The second, older than this one, is 20 metres deep and finishes on a layer of water underground. The elegant canonica with an independent apartments is reached through the courtyard . The unit is composed by: two bedrooms,
two bathrooms, an independent kitchen and a living room. The windows of the apartment face, on one side the cloister and on the other the landscape around the property.
FIRST FLOOR (544 square metres): Entered via the internal staircase, is composed by three bedrooms with en suite bathroom, living room with stone fireplace and panoramic view and bedroom. ATTIC (380 square metres): Completely restored, has now six bedrooms with en suite
bathroom and wardrobe, all elegantly furnished. All the bathrooms have been made with travertine of the Crete Senesi. Two annexes of 900 square metres in all have been demolished. Their size can be easily used to build something else. A technical room with boiler lies underground, a few metres from the abbey. On the east side of the Abbey there is a wide space of 500 square metres, which is a natural terrace where from one can admire the
landscape around. Asciano, Rapolano and Serre di Rapolano on one side and the Amiata Mountain on the other side.
On the front side of the Monastery there are two other terraces with views over Siena and The Val D’Orcia. The land of 3 hectares has many types of plants: cypress trees, mulberry, pomegranate trees, broom, wild roses, rosemary, lavender, bay trees and live oaks. There is a small lake used to irrigate the land with an automatic irrigation system.
USAGE AND POTENTIAL The property, thanks to its size, to its fantastic location and to the space distribution is suitable to be used for many purposes. It can be a prestigious private residence but it can be easily converted also into a luxury Hotel ............ |
