In the Chiana Valley, everywhere you look
at, you can see, even in the distance, typical houses of the 18th Century: the Leopoldine. The name is taken from their creator, the Grand Duke of Tuscany Pietro Leopoldo II di Lorena.
The houses of farmers were not only uncomfortable, but also dangerous and unhealthy.
The Grand Duke himself ordered an investigation to verify whether the houses were ventilated, sheltered from chill and rain. The results showed that in many cases people lived among animals, and
were therefore exposed to illnesses and infections.
This is why he decided to invest some money to build new colonicas, all with the same aspect. What was different was just size and sometimes disposition.
A typical feature of the Leopoldina was the “colombaia”, where farmers used to store their small tools.
