taverns and small restaurants of the towns and for country enthusiasts, also in some “Agriturismi” ( farm houses) along the proposed route. In Valdarno you can begin with the “stufato alla sangiovannese”, a tasty meat dish cooked for some time followed by “arrosto girato”, “pollo del valdarno” cooked in tomato and all of it washed down with the best wines of the region. The Valdichiana is well-known as the area where a prized breed of cattle is raised
called, in fact, Chianina and you can savour succulent steaks cooked over live coals and accompanied by red wines from the Cortona vinyards.
In Valtiberina the local cuisine includes wild game, “i bringoli” (wide cut spaghetti made of wheat flour) various wild game, truffles, mushrooms, porcini and prugnoli, home-made desserts and, to finish off, a glass of good vinsanto.
After having been delighted by the beauties of the art works and by the landscape and if you still
have some time at your disposal, you can browse around the various shops in the valley in search of some delicious food item or some piece of clothing. Clothing and high fashion leather-wear, glass and crystal, wine and oil, “zolfini” beans, chestnut flour from Pratomagno and the delicious hams of the Valdarno mountains are just some of the numerous products which can be purchased in Valdarno.
In the artisanal
shops of Valtibertina and Valdichiana you can buy hand-made pottery, wood craft pieces, materials, embroidery and, if you’re keen on antiques, there is simply the embarrassment of choice from among the numerous shops which enliven the old villages. |
